Book Review: Annotation | @mcleod

I last but not least experienced a opportunity to browse Annotation by Remi Kalir and Antero Garcia. Despite the fact that I’ve in no way met Antero, Remi is my college colleague in this article at the College of Colorado Denver. Remi tells intriguing tales about annotation (no, really!), so I was thrilled to browse his views in print.

The reserve highlights five critical functions of annotation: offering details, sharing commentary, sparking dialogue, expressing electrical power, and aiding studying. Chapter 5 on expressing electric power most likely was my favored, especially the sections on the #MeToo poetry of Isobel O’Hare and Alexandra Bell’s use of posters to obstacle racial stereotypes in The New York Situations. The book has several attention-grabbing examples of annotation in motion (hint: it is not just men and women creating notes in the margins of printed textbooks) and is at its most effective when it is talking about these actual globe exemplars.

Whilst I am an energetic reader, I’m not considerably of an annotator other than highlighting passages or prices for later. Until I met Remi, I hadn’t seriously specified substantially considered to the observe of annotation. The e-book gave me some new lenses via which to feel about this observe.

Whether or not you’re a looking through geek or not, Annotation is a speedy study that should spark your pondering in some new instructions. If you want to get a flavor beforehand, below are a few of podcasts with Remi to get you commenced:
