Our Center University Library in Laurel, Maryland has been a loud and happy Protected Space and Ally for ALL of our LGBTQIA and Neurodivergent students for a long time. We have bought each individual well reviewed, asked for, intriguing, and center faculty accepted fiction and non-fiction book on these subject areas. I daresay we have one of the premier collections about! We have Safe House indicators all over, a rainbow narwhal (pictured over) and groupings of publications on display all the time.

BUT… I have solid opinions about placing a Style label on these publications. I am really cognizant that some of my Middle Schoolers are curious or questioning to understand far more about but aren’t ready to out themselves. To their peers and to their mother and father. This is nonetheless a different explanation I am in opposition to Genrefication. I know, amid some of my other Long run Prepared Librarians this is a controversial topic. But to group all these guides in one location means that children could be Quite HESITANT to gravitate and look through that region of the Library.
I recall back again in the 80’s in school, a good friend of mine requested me to make a pilgrimage to the iconic Lambda Rising bookstore in Baltimore for the reason that they didn’t want to go in there alone. We even drove all-around the block to “scenario the be part of!” prior to parking and heading within. So I can just imagine how a teenager who has thoughts about their gender identity in Middle College might not be completely ready to dangle out with individuals “labeled” textbooks in my University Library.
I Don’t Like Labels
